He was best known for his jazz photographs from the 1950s and 1960s. He also photographed fashion and still life images for Esquire, Ebony, Essence, American Visions, and others, as well as taking part in Edward Steichen's The Family of Man project.
Bell studied Cinematic Art at NYU and frequented and photographed the dancehalls of the 50’s, capturing most of the legendary artists of the era’s most radical music form. He was of St. Lucian in the Caribbean decent. Also associated with
